Fort Stewart is a United States Army post located in the southeastern region of Georgia. It is one of the largest military installations in the eastern United States and covers over 280,000 acres of land. The post is situated in Liberty and Bryan counties, near the city of Hinesville and about 41 miles southwest of Savannah.
Fort Stewart was established in 1940 as a training and maneuver area for armored units. During World War II, it served as a crucial training ground for soldiers and was used to stage troops and equipment for deployment overseas. Since then, the post has continued to be a vital training center for the U.S. Army, providing facilities and resources for various units to prepare for deployment and combat missions.
Today, Fort Stewart is home to the 3rd Infantry Division, the Army’s premier power projection platform on the East Coast. The installation also hosts other tenant units, including the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, and the 3rd Sustainment Brigade.
The post offers a range of facilities to support the training, welfare, and quality of life for the soldiers and their families stationed there. This includes housing, schools, healthcare facilities, recreational areas, and various support services. Fort Stewart also has a robust infrastructure to support the extensive training and logistical requirements of its units, including live-fire ranges, training areas, and airfields.
In addition to its military operations, Fort Stewart is also actively involved in the local community. The post has partnered with neighboring cities and counties to support economic development, infrastructure projects, and enhance the quality of life for the surrounding area.
Fort Stewart plays a critical role in the nation’s defense and military readiness. It continues to be a key center for training, deploying, and sustaining Army forces, ensuring that they are prepared and equipped to face the challenges of modern warfare. As such, the post remains an integral part of the military’s efforts to protect the country and its interests both at home and abroad.
